Abstract <p>This paper examines the problem of authoritarianism, its origins, and characteristics. It also identifies the conditions under which it can spread throughout society. Imperfect democracy creates favorable conditions for this. The experience of American authoritarianism and its evolution from the 1950s to the 1990s are explored. Particular attention is paid to the authoritarianism of the 45th US President, Donald Trump, and his impact on the United States.</p>
