Inviscid Instability of the Boundary Layer on a Compliant Surface at Supersonic Free-Stream Velocities

Abstract
For a compliant plate placed in supersonic flow, the instability of the overlying boundary layer with respect to inviscid perturbations is analyzed using asymptotic theory of free interaction. It is shown that unstable inviscid perturbations persist only if the inertia of the plate is taken into account, while damping of the plate plays a significant stabilizing role. The flow is also stabilized by increasing the elasticity, bending stiffness, and tensile stress of the plate.
