Ecological State of Lake Imandra. Hydrological and Geochemical Conditions

The article summarizes the studies of the dynamics of abiotic parameters of the Imandra ecosystem under the conditions of almost a century-long anthropogenic load on the lake itself and its catchment area, conducted in recent decades. A historical overview of the development and studies of the lake is given in the context of the development of large-scale industries on its shores and catchment area. The article presents data characterizing the climate of the catchment area, lake morphometry characteristics, thermal and ice regime, as well as an analysis of hydrochemical parameters of water quality (suspension, pH, electrical conductivity, gas regime, ionic composition, biogenic elements and organic matter, and microelements, including heavy metals). An idea of the mechanisms of water quality formation in the modern period is given. Original data on the territorial distribution of macro- and microelements in bottom sediments, on the accumulation of organic matter and heavy metals are presented. Sedimentation and a picture of changes in the geochemical composition of bottom sediments are reconstructed as a reflection of the dynamics of water quality. An assessment of the processes of mineral formation reflecting changes in the geochemical environment in bottom sediments is given. The monograph is intended for a wide range of readers—specialists and students in the field of hydrochemistry and geochemistry of environmental protection and ecology.
