Simulating Snowmelt Floods on the Rivers of the Northern Part of the East European Plain by the TerM Land Surface Model
摘要
The TerM land surface model is part of the INMCM global Earth System Model, the only Russian model used in the CMIP global climate experiments conducted in recent decades. The future development of the TerM model is associated with improvement of parameterizations of hydrological processes, particularly snowmelt flood formation processes, the accuracy of which in the current model version does not meet the accepted hydrological criteria. In this paper, we compare the simulated hydrographs of the Northern Dvina and Pechora rivers with observational data for the period 2008–2020. The model configuration uses a 0.5° × 0.5° spatial grid; the input atmospheric parameters are ERA5 reanalysis data with a 1-hour resolution; precipitation data are based on Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) with a 1-day resolution. Possible sources of model errors are analyzed. To improve the modeling performance, modifications were proposed to the parametrizations of frozen soil processes, subgrid heterogeneity of runoff formation and snow cover, and the radiation balance of snow under forest cover, as well as calibration of the soil infiltration capacity parameter in the catchment area. It was shown that the modified version of the model satisfactorily reproduces the observed spring flood hydrographs.
