Hydrology and Morphology of Confluence Nodes of Rivers with a Split Channel

The article considers the confluence nodes of rivers with a split channel, which are most complex among the channels with various types of confluences in terms of both their morphology and the hydrological regime as well as the distribution of runoff by channels. Such nodes are a relatively rare phenomenon, typical for confluences where one or both rivers are large (or largest), but they can also occur at the mouths of small tributaries under a certain combination of conditions. Based on the literature analysis, field materials, and satellite images, a classification of confluence nodes of rivers with a split channel is given, identifying six different types based on their configuration. For each type, a regional analysis is carried out with examples both in Russia and worldwide. Using the confluence of the Ob and Ket, Anadyr and Main as examples, the conditions for the formation of reversible flows in individual channels of confluence nodes are considered (based on observations of the water level and turbidity of water in the channels, determined from satellite images).
