Estimation of Groundwater Recharge and Water Requirement Management Using Empirical Equations and Geospatial Technology

The study uses geospatial technologies, to map the spatial variability of groundwater and drainages in Sumsuih village, Mizoram. The probability analysis for the rainfall return period using Weibull’s formula and groundwater recharge are computed. Eight springs were sampled during pre-monsoon season—the period when the village faces the highest scarcity of water and public water supply is limited. The samples of water are tested against selected parameters and compared with standard drinking water quality. One sample exceeded the allowed level of iron and two samples were found to be highly deviated from the acceptable limits in turbidity. The study revealed that during pre-monsoon season, water from two springs of Sumsuih village is unfit for human consumption. As a consequence, the villagers were obliged to entirely rely on rainfall, and insufficient water supply, provided to every household by the Public Health Engineering Department, Government of Mizoram.
