Flood Vulnerability Assessment in the Middle Brahmaputra River Basin, India: A Multitemporal Synthetic Aperture Radar Approach

Brahmaputra River in India is one of the perennial rivers that experience yearly floods, affecting the ecosystem and leading to economic losses. Recent advancements in space technologies have led to the introduction of microwave remote sensing datasets at a higher spatial and temporal resolution that helps understand flood occurrences. Integrating Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems technique also enabled the ease of providing mitigation measures and accurate damage assessment. The present study aims to adopt Sentinel 1 SAR datasets to extract the flood extent from 2017 to 2022 and rank the regions based on the frequency of floods in the area. Flooded periods are extracted from 23 images and are combined to rank the vulnerable zones. Based on the study, it is identified that 347.70 and 380.84 sq. km of the region are moderately and highly vulnerable to floods, respectively. The study also determined that 3837.11 sq. km of agricultural land area and 110.54 km2 of urban settlement area fall under a weak zone where the authorities should focus on minimizing fatalities and economic losses.
