Abstract <p>A model is developed for the nucleation of a combined crack in the total elastic field of a negative wedge disclination and a retarded planar pileup of lattice dislocations. A criterion is proposed for crack nucleation in the total elastic field of a disclination and a hindered dislocation pileup with a small number of dislocations, and it can be applied to materials with a fragmented structure. Crack nucleation conditions are analyzed as functions of the number of dislocations in a pileup, the external shear stress, and the disclination parameters. In the limiting case of large lattice dislocation pileups without a disclination, the proposed criterion is shown to transform into the Stroh criterion for crack nucleation at the head of a dislocation pileup.</p>
