Abstract

In high temperature aerospace applications, the protection of materials from degradation, corrosion and melting is critical. In this study, we focus on the development of yttrium-based YSZ zirconia on SS304 material, which aims to enhance their corrosion resistance and mechanical durability. This paper expands the application of ceramic coating, in particular the YSZ, SS304 substrates at thickness of 50 and 100 μm. The coating applied by the method of plasma spraying technique, and the post-coating tests are done to increase the performance for the material. Tensile testing, coating thickness measurement, pitting corrosion test, hardness test and wear test were conducted to obtain the effectiveness of the coating. Test results will help improving the thermal and mechanical properties, particularly zirconia-based ceramics making this coating a promising one for aerospace applications.
