Development of Microsatellite Markers for Schizothorax macropogon (Cyprinidae)

Schizothorax macropogon is distinguished by its adaptations to harsh environments, including cold tolerance, a slow growth rate, and delayed sexual maturity. Evaluating its genetic diversity and population genetic structure is of critical importance. We have successfully developed 10 microsatellites from S. macropogon and characterized these in a sample of 24 individuals. The calculated expected heterozygosity, observed heterozygosity, Shannon–Weiner diversity indices, and polymorphic information content of the 10 microsatellites ranged from 0.799 to 0.902, 0.599 to 0.822, 1.05 to 1.67, and 0.475 to 0.654, respectively. These microsatellites not only proved useful for parentage determination in S. macropogon but also provided valuable insights into the population structure and breeding patterns within the species.
