Abstract <p>A novel gram-positive, rod-shaped, anaerobic fermentative bacterium, strain SC589<sup>T</sup>, was isolated from a terrestrial mud volcano (Taman Peninsula, Russia) and characterized. The strain grew at 14–47°C (optimum 37°C), the pH range of 6.0–10.0 (optimum pH 7.5) and with 1.0–12.0% (wt/vol) NaCl (optimum 2.0–4.0%). Substrates utilized by strain SC589<sup>T</sup> included yeast extract, peptone, tryptone, alanine, arginine, and pyruvate. Elemental sulfur, thiosulfate, and Fe(III) were used as electron acceptors and enhanced growth. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain SC589<sup>T</sup> was found to belong to the family <i>Tissierellaceae</i> (phylum <i>Bacillota</i>), with the highest similarities to <i>Gudongella oleilytica</i> (96%) and members of the genus <i>Soehngenia</i> (93–94%). The morphological, physiological, metabolic, and phylogenetic analyses demonstrated that strain SC589<sup>T</sup> (=KCTC 25768<sup>T</sup> = VKM B-3840<sup>T</sup>) represents a novel species of the genus <i>Gudongella</i>, for which the name <i>Gudongella ferriphila</i> sp. nov. is proposed.</p>
