Insights into Heavy Metal and Antibiotic Resistome of Soil Bacteria Originating from East Antarctica Oases and Arctic Permafrost

Natural communities in environments unaffected by human activity, including Antarctic soils and Arctic permafrost sediments, can serve as model systems for studying the spectra, levels, and mechanisms of resistance to heavy metals (HMs) and antibiotics (ABs) that existed prior to anthropogenic influence. In the present study, we investigated the resistance spectra to various ABs and HMs in bacterial collections isolated from samples of permafrost sediments (PFS) of Yamal and from soils of East Antarctica oases. In both collections, most resistant isolates belonged to the genera Pseudomonas and Microbacterium. Antarctic isolates were more resistant to both ABs and HMs than the Arctic ones. Resistance to two or more ABs of different classes was exhibited by 47.7% of Antarctic and 10% of Arctic strains, and resistance to two or more HMs by 81.8 and 50% of the isolates, respectively. It was shown that the HMs content in the Antarctic soil samples, from which the studied strains were isolated, does not exceed the average background levels found in unpolluted soils. Several assumptions have been put forward to explain the reasons for increased resistance of Antarctic bacteria.
