摘要

Abstract

This is the first report on combined inhibitory effect of the hormone estradiol and the antibiotic tetracycline on the type strain Staphylococcus aureus 209 PT. Combined application of the hormone and antibiotic resulted in a significantly increased doubling time compared to the samples treated with tetracycline alone (0.05 µg/mL). While the combined effect was more pronounced against initial growth stages of planktonic cultures, it also occurred in the case of biofilms. In almost all cases the highest effect of estradiol was found at its concentrations one or two orders of magnitude exceeding the physiological one (2.2 × 10−10 M).
