Comparative Analysis of the Effect of Nanoparticles with Different Composition on Escherichia coli Cells

Abstract
We have performed the analysis of carbon and boron nitride (BN) nanomaterials action on bacterial cells of Escherichia coli strain depending on the type and structure of the particles in the material. The action of nanotubes, diamond, graphite, cBN and hBN nanoparticles in suspension has been studied. The results show that the safety of nanoparticles depends not only on their composition, but also on their internal structure. Based on microscopy and bioluminescence measurements we conclude that incubation with both carbon and boron nitride nanotubes in form of suspension at concentration of 160 μg/mL induce dramatic changes in the structure of bacterial cells and should be concerned as hazardous materials.
