High-Affinity Blocker of Insect Potassium Channels from the Venom of the Scorpion Orthochirus scrobiculosus

Abstract
Bioinsecticides based on natural toxins found in venoms isan emerging field in biotechnology and beyond. Scorpions that huntinsects represent a promising source of bioinsecticides. Here, wedescribe OsK2, an insecticidal peptide from the venom of the CentralAsian black scorpion Orthochirus scrobiculosus.We present the correct amino acid sequence of OsK2 and show itspronounced activity on the voltage-gated potassium channel Shakerfrom Drosophila melanogaster.Being selective towards insect ion channels, OsK2 stands out asa promising scaffold for the development of bioinsecticides.
