Abstract <p>The article surveys scientific studies devoted to the effectof placental hormones produced during physiological pregnancy onnatural killer (NK) cell plasticity accompanied by a change in their phenotypeand functional activity. Highlighted is the primary role of estrogens,progesterone, human chorionic gonadotropin, leptin, ghrelin, andkisspeptin in the induction of NK cell plasticity processes. Placentalhormones are able to transform peripheral blood NK lymphocytes intodecidual NK (dNK) cells characterized by reduced cytotoxicity andexpression of inhibitory receptors, as well as an increased productionof the fetoprotective cytokine TGF-β. At the same time, hormonesreduce the production of such abortogenic cytokines as IL-17A andIFN-γ. The action of these hormones is specific and implementedat concentrations characteristic of pregnancy. The hormones canrealize their effects by recruiting other cells of the placentalmicroenvironment. Moreover, the hormones support the phenomenonof plasticity, exerting similar effects on dNK cells, which mayapparently enhance maternal immune tolerance toward the fetus andpromote physiological fetal development during pregnancy.</p>
