Abstract—

We present well-founded characterization of seven types of free surface of crystalline materials, which relies on results of systematic studies of real structure by a variety of techniques with allowance for the evolution of concepts on the basis of a list of publications (131 references). With allowance for advances in novel directions in inorganic materials research, the corresponding manifestations of the size effect in the free surface structure are taken into account.
