Abstract

In this study, tetrafluoroethylene telomers have been synthesized in carbon tetrachloride. The synthesized telomers have been irradiated in air with 60Co γ-rays with doses in the range of 18–1020 kGy. Studies of the IR spectra of the irradiation products have revealed that the intensity of the absorption band at 850 cm−1, which can be assigned to the –CCl3 terminal groups, decreases with an increase in the radiation dose. At the same time, a new absorption band at ~1775 cm−1 attributed to the carboxyl group appears in the IR spectrum; the intensity of this band increases with an increase in the radiation dose. Based on studies of the dose dependence of the intensity of the above absorption bands, it has been concluded that the removal or transformation of the –CCl3 terminal groups and the formation of –COOH groups are independent processes.
