Abstract <p>In March 2014, typical coastal ice fields—so-called “kolobovnik”—with a total area of about 25 km<sup>2</sup>, were found in the central part of the Southern Basin of Lake Baikal. A core of bottom sediments was collected from a depth of 1246 m in the area of their discovery. The composition of Baikal sediments and sedimentary matter extracted from ice monoliths (kolobovnik admixture) has been analyzed. Low concentrations of biogenic silica and diatom valves, the dominance of benthic species, and a coarser grain size composition of the kolobovnik admixture when compared to surface bottom sediments indicate that the source of the kolobovnik is the shallow zone of the lake. The data prove the existence of recent ice transport in Southern Baikal.</p>
