Abstract <p>It is shown that the 580-year cycle of eclipses occurs due to modulation of the Saros cycle (18.03&#xa0;tropical years) by the precession cycle of the Lunar orbit plane (18.61 years). Superposition of these two cycles generates the 580-year cycle of lunar and solar eclipses. A mathematical model of this cycle is constructed.</p>
