Estimation of Anthropogenic Methane Emissions for Some Regions of Siberia Based on the ECCAD Service and Correlation of Service Data with Ground-Based Measurements for the Teriberka Region

Using the CAMS-GLOB-ANT database of the ECCAD online service, an assessment has been made of average annual variations in anthropogenic methane emissions for the Urengoy deposit and individual coal mines in Kuzbass, Krasnoyarsk krai, Irkutsk oblast, and Buryatia for 2000–2023. Information on monthly and annual emission volumes is available for each grid cell (0.1° × 0.1°) of the methane emissions map in the CAMS-GLOB-ANT inventory. Significant changes in site operation are monitored by jumps in CH4 emissions. A comparison of methane emissions from open-pit coal mines with leaks at the gas field within a resolution element has shown that CH4 emissions at the coal mines are almost ten times higher than leaks at the gas field. Methane leaks at the gas field during extraction and transportation have been decreasing since 2015. A positive trend in methane emissions is observed for open-pit coal mines. A close relationship is shown between ground-based measurements of methane concentration at the Teriberka station and the assessment of methane emissions based on CAMS-GLOB-ANT inventory data.
