Modeling of Climate and Atmospheric and Oceanic Dynamics: to the 100th Anniversary of Academician G.I. Marchuk
摘要
The introductory paper to this issue of the journal “Izvestiya, Atmospheric and Oceanic Physics” dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Academician Guri Ivanovich Marchuk describes the main directions of his scientific activity. They had a significant impact on the development of modern geophysical hydrodynamics. These are weather forecasting; modeling of the climate system; application of the theory of adjoint equations to problems of geophysical fluid dynamics; and computational algorithms. The ideas and mathematical methods of modern geophysical fluid dynamics initiated by G.I. Marchuk and developed by his scientific school over the course of 25 years of the 20th century and 25 years of the 21st century are discussed. The vivid deep mark he left on science is noted, and the results obtained by him, his disciples, and colleagues in the field of geophysical fluid dynamics are highlighted.
