摘要

Innovation in new technology fields is a key driver of high-quality corporate development. Against the backdrop of an increasingly specialized social division of labor, this paper conducts an empirical analysis of the impact of labor outsourcing on corporate innovation boundary using data disclosed in the annual reports of Chinese listed companies from 2012 to 2023. The study finds that labor outsourcing significantly promotes the expansion of corporate innovation boundary, and this conclusion holds after a series of robustness tests. The mechanism of this effect manifests as an integration of internal and external resources: increased R&D investment facilitates internal resource integration, while enhanced integration along the industrial chain facilitates external resource integration. Heterogeneity analysis indicates that the role of labor outsourcing in expanding the innovation boundary is more pronounced when enterprises adopt outsourcing arrangements with lower labor costs, engage in high-value-added outsourcing tasks, possess stronger capabilities for absorbing external knowledge, and operate in industries where the pace of knowledge change is slower. This deepens our understanding of the factors influencing the operation of the resource integration mechanism.
