<p>Understanding the interplay among urbanisation, innovation, and individual creativity is essential for informing effective policies and promoting sustainable development that benefits both individuals and society. Using behavioural and brain data of 3480 participants (2012–2023) in China, along with urbanisation and innovation indexes across provinces (2007–2022), we conducted coupling coordination and multilevel analyses to investigate these relationships and the role of brain structural plasticity. Results demonstrated that individual creativity was positively associated with both urbanisation and innovation, and provinces with a higher level of urbanisation exhibited more closely coupling coordinated development among the three indices over time. Notably, the mean urbanisation index of the last 5 years can significantly predict individual creativity. Mediation analyses further indicated that variations in brain volume within the default mode, somatomotor, and central executive networks significantly impacted the effect of urbanisation on shaping individual creativity. These findings first establish a direct link among urbanisation, innovation, individual creativity, and neuroanatomical changes, offering new insights and empirical evidence of the mechanisms bridging macro-level urban sustainability with micro-level individual sustainability.</p>
