Measurement and optimization pathways of the integration of digital transformation into rural revitalization: evidence from the Yangtze River Economic Belt (2012–2022)
摘要
Rural revitalization is a critical necessity to address the main conflict within Chinese society. Digital transformation is a powerful initiative for promoting rural revitalization. By measuring the degree of integration between digital transformation and rural revitalization, it is possible to identify the shortcomings and opportunities of digital transformation in facilitating rural development. Based on panel data from 11 provinces in the Yangtze River Economic Belt from 2012 to 2022, this study employs the entropy weight method to assess the indices of digital transformation and rural revitalization. A coupling coordination model is utilized to quantify the level of integration and analyze its temporal characteristics, while spatial autocorrelation and hotspot analysis are used to explore spatial patterns. To identify key indicators, we employ a two-way fixed-effects regression model combined with principal component analysis for dimensionality reduction. This study examines the challenges and opportunities of digital transformation in rural areas from two dimensions. The research findings confirm that the integrated development within the Yangtze River Economic Belt follows a three-stage process: foundation building-stable coexistence-adaptive adjustments. The role of digital transformation in boosting rural revitalization appears somewhat weakened in the later stages of the study. The degree of integration in the region exhibits a characteristic of “polarization with a stable central axis”. Although spatial trends in regional cooperation remain unconfirmed, they generally demonstrate a consistent and favorable progression. To enhance the integration and synchronization of digital technologies with rural revitalization subsystems, priority should be given to digital circulation applications and digital innovation-driven strategies. These efforts must align with local industrial restructuring and financial investments. Accordingly, this paper proposes actionable recommendations across three dimensions: deepening regional cooperation, increasing the flexibility of financial services, and establishing a robust multi-stakeholder governance coordination system. Drawing on China’s domestic methodologies and global insights, this study aims to address the inconsistencies and obstacles in managing rural digital transformation. This study integrates China’s domestic experience with global perspectives to tackle governance inconsistencies and implementation barriers in rural digital transformation. It identifies actionable pathways for governance optimization, offering both practical strategies and a theoretical framework to enhance rural governance efficiency.
