摘要

The practice of male circumcision is widespread among Muslims worldwide, while the tradition of godparenthood (kirvelik) is not as common. Although this tradition can be found in a broad area stretching from Dagestan to Adana and from Tabriz to the east of Sivas, it can be said that it is a tradition widely practiced in the Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia regions of Turkey. This study examines the godparenthood relationship established between Muslims and Armenians living in the Diyarbakır province during the late Ottoman period. Muslims preferred their Christian Armenian neighbors as well as their co-religionists when choosing godparents. For Muslims, it is noteworthy how a person who does not belong to the Islamic faith can be one of the most important actors in a religious ritual such as circumcision. This study attempts to answer this question. In addition, the role of the godparent relationship in the social relations between Muslims and Armenians and how it is reflected in social life are examined. It has been determined that this tradition contributes to strengthening the relations between the two communities, increasing solidarity, and maintaining social order.
