The Complexities and Lengthiness of Undergraduate Admission System in Bangladesh. Does the General, Science and Technology (GST) Universities Integrated Admission System Need Reformation?

This study explores the challenges and implications of the General, Science and Technology (GST) Integrated Universities Cluster Admission System in Bangladesh. Introduced in 2021, the GST system aimed to simplify university admissions, reduce financial burden, and ensure fair access through a single examination process. However, despite its goals, the system has generated several difficulties related to cost, complexity, and transparency. Using a qualitative research method, data were collected through open-ended questionnaires from 40 purposively selected participants, including teachers as FGD and students as IDIs, who are directly involved in the GST admission process. The findings reveal that while the system reduced multiple entrance exams, it failed to eliminate inequality. Students continued to face financial stress, long admission procedures, and a lack of clarity in merit-based seat distribution. Participants also reported administrative delays and reduced campus diversity. The study concludes that the GST system, though efficient in theory, requires significant reform in practice. Strengthening digital infrastructure, ensuring transparent merit listing, and adopting a hybrid admission model are necessary to balance fairness and flexibility. The study provides practical policy insights for improving Bangladesh’s higher education admission system and contributes to broader discussions on centralized admission reforms in developing contexts.
