Gig Work, Gender, and Visibility: Portrayals of Arab Women in Digital Labour Economies
摘要
This article explores the media portrayals of Arab women engaged in digital gig work across news platforms, social media, and development campaigns. Drawing from feminist media theory and visibility politics, it examines the contradiction between visibility and recognition. Based on research conducted in Egypt, including interviews and media monitoring, the piece highlights how mediated representations shape cultural imaginaries of labour and gender. It interrogates whether such portrayals empower or further marginalize gig-working women. The analysis aims to bridge media narratives with lived experiences in informal economies.
