<p>This article examines the emergence of Buddhist constructions imposing Sinhalese Buddhist identity in Tamil-majority areas as a multifaceted issue (for example linked with military occupation of civilian lands), feeding into the broader hegemonic agenda of Sinhala Buddhist nationalism propagated through state-sponsored development projects. In contrast, during the British colonial rule, the establishment of the Pettah United Bodhi Society attests to how communities rallied against persecution of Buddhism even though Sinhala Buddhist nationalism was gestating at wider level.</p>
