<p>Over the past decade, the ethos of secularism has been under attack in India, from the Hindu right, and with complicity of the State. Feminists are trying to manoeuvre and cope with these new challenges. After many decades of using the language of claims-making and moral outrage, feminists are seeking a language that can connote shared responsibility and genuine empathy for those being discriminated and excluded. This article discusses examples of people’s mobilizations that demarcate a shift in how secularism is being practiced. Beyond resorting to rational intellectual arguments in favour of equality of all citizens, the role of emotions in triggering empathy as well as a collective identity has been apparent in recent mobilizations. The case studies emphasize the need to re-discover and re-invent relationships between citizens, drawing on shared neighbourhoods, cultures and histories, with a broad emotional appeal.</p>

Over the past decade, the ethos of secularism has been under attack in India, from the Hindu right, and with complicity of the State.
