The impact of status inconsistency on corporate philanthropy among chinese entrepreneurs: An empirical analysis
摘要
This study examines corporate philanthropy, a critical strategic decision among Chinese entrepreneurs, through an integrative lens combining institutional theory and status research. Our investigation reveals how status inconsistency across multiple social hierarchies influences philanthropic behavior in China’s unique institutional context. Through analysis of data from Chinese private firms, we show that entrepreneurs’ status inconsistency substantially boosts corporate philanthropic donations. This relationship is amplified (1) in regions with less developed private sector economies, and (2) among entrepreneurs with prior unemployment experience. These findings advance corporate philanthropy research by identifying status inconsistency as a crucial non-economic determinant that complements traditional financial explanations.
