We were robbed: the sport of stealing enjoyment
摘要
This essay theorizes how libidinal ties within groups are affectively sourced by fantasies of rival groups stealing enjoyment (jouissance). Using Lacanian ideas, it examines how sport fandom highlights specific ways social bonds depend on emotions and fantasies about the cause, quality and course of collective lack. The distinct space sport occupies allows fans to acknowledge fears and resentments more generally disavowed, regarding not only threats to group identity, but the enjoyment collectively taken in theft.
