<p>This content moderator of the internet is a curious thing: both reviled and desired, both boss and worker, capable of being understood only through a synthesis of psychoanalysis and Marxism. This article argues that via such tropes as Hegel’s beautiful soul, Carl Schmitt’s sovereign exception, and contemporary attitudes towards social media, we can best analyze content moderation, echo chambers, and other affordances of the digital. Diagrams or algorithms (a Jamesonian semiotic rectangle, a Lacanian schema) do pop up.</p>
