Exploring Price Rigidity and Market Dynamics: A Review of Truman F. Bewley’s ‘Price setting’
摘要
This review analyses Truman F. Bewley’s empirical study on price development and rigidity, conducted through comprehensive interviews with industry professionals. The book presents three main results about the correlation between product differentiation and price rigidity, the dynamics of marginal variable costs in production, and the widespread application of formula-based pricing in commodity markets. Bewley’s interview-based methodology provides significant insights into the practical aspects of price setting that enhance conventional economic theory and put into different industries perspectives. The study substantially improves one’s understanding of business cycle dynamics and pricing behaviour across diverse industries; however important methodological limitations must be recognised.
