Media effects on preferential voting in a flexible-list PR system
摘要
This study investigates the effects of media presence on the performance of candidates in a flexible-list proportional representation (PR) system. Analyzing four parliamentary elections from 2010 to 2021 in the Czech Republic, this research extends previous findings that have focused primarily on Belgium. Our results confirm the presence of significant media effects: candidates receiving more media coverage in newspapers garner more preference votes. This study also explores how media presence mediates the effects of ballot position and political experience, revealing that candidates higher on the ballot list and national politicians benefit more, in terms of preference votes, from attracting greater media attention. This paper’s findings contribute to an increased understanding of the dynamics of intra-party competition and the role of the media in the electoral success.
