Geological thermal energy storage offers terawatt-hours of energy storage capacity
摘要
Geological thermal energy storage (GeoTES) is an emerging technology that addresses the critical need for large-scale, long-duration energy storage. GeoTES stores thermal energy in geological formations, enabling later use for direct heating, cooling, or electricity generation. We describe characteristics of viable formations and estimate the energy capacity of four reservoirs in the United States to illustrate the immense storage potential of GeoTES – on the scale of terawatt-hours per formation.
