Social connection and loneliness in the era of extreme weather and climate change
摘要
Climate change is not just an environmental crisis; it is also a profound psychological, behavioural and social crisis. This narrative review synthesizes emerging evidence on how climate change exacerbates loneliness and social isolation and how social connections can be a tool for public health and resilience during extreme weather. This Review maps the evidence-based pathways and cyclical relationships between climate hazards, displacement, community disruption, environmental degradation, and social isolation and loneliness, demonstrating that social isolation is a risk factor for adverse health outcomes and mortality following climate disasters. Integrating the mitigation of isolation and loneliness into climate response strategies can secure emotional and social well-being alongside environmental recovery, while social connection can be a solution to ensure the health of communities and the planet.
