Co-recycling of plastics and other waste materials

Plastics are produced in large volumes and often have short service lives, leading to resource waste and pollution when they are not managed and/or recycled. However, the heterogeneity of plastic waste and its coexistence with other waste streams complicate recycling efforts. Chemical recycling, compared with mechanical recycling and waste treatment approaches such as incineration and landfill, might be able to co-process different types of waste. In this Review, we discuss co-recycling technologies based on chemical recycling in plastic management. These approaches could enable co-recovery and valorization of mixed plastics alongside other waste materials. Integrated, synergistic and sequential co-recycling technologies are being developed for co-recycling of mixed plastics, plastics plus CO2 and plastics plus spent batteries. Techno-economic analysis and lifecycle assessments show that co-recycling technologies can lead to an improvement of the economic and environmental benefits of plastic recycling, although a more detailed framework is still required for a comprehensive assessment. The design of co-recycling approaches should focus on feedstock diversity, sorting accuracy, energy consumption, product value, economic viability and environmental impact, while balancing market demand and technological practicality.
