A dual moderation model of the relationship between depression and adolescent social media addiction
摘要
Although the link between depression and social media addiction in adolescents is well established, the specific mechanisms driving this association remain underexplored. This study aims to investigate how physical exercise and difficulty identifying feelings moderate the relationship between depression and social media addiction, thereby offering deeper insight into the psychological processes involved. A total of 3,134 adolescents from China participated in this study by completing a self-administered questionnaire (mean age = 14.82 years, SD = 1.407). The survey assessed levels of depression, social media addiction, physical exercise, and difficulty identifying feelings, alongside demographic characteristics. Statistical analyses were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, version 27.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). Descriptive statistics and correlation analyses were initially conducted to explore relationships among these variables. A moderated modeling approach was subsequently applied to test the interaction effects. After adjusting for demographic factors, depression was positively correlated with social media addiction (r = 0.246, p < 0.001). In contrast, physical exercise showed a negative correlation with social media addiction (r = − 0.065, p < 0.001). The interaction term between depression and physical exercise was significantly associated with lower levels of social media addiction (r = − 0.041, p < 0.05). Additionally, difficulty in identifying feelings was positively associated with social media addiction (r = 0.226, p < 0.001), and the interaction between difficulty in identifying feelings and depression was positively associated with social media addiction (r = 0.035, p < 0.05). The results confirm a significant relationship between depression and adolescent social media addiction, with both physical exercise and difficulty identifying feelings acting as moderators. These insights underscore the importance of integrating physical activity and emotional awareness training into prevention and intervention programs. Such approaches offer a robust theoretical and practical basis for mitigating the impact of depression on addictive behaviors and enhancing adolescent mental well-being.
