摘要

Petrological and geotechnical evaluations of the Dhedhertu dolostone were conducted to assess its suitability for use as a dimension stone. The suitability of dolostone for use as a dimension stone was assessed based on its mineralogical, petrographic, physical, and mechanical properties. The evaluated physical properties included porosity, water absorption, bulk density, and specific gravity, whereas the mechanical properties focused on compressive strength. In addition, the color and appearance of the cut and polished sections were examined. The study of dolostone is significant because its geotechnical, mineralogical, and physical characteristics strongly influences its suitability for dimension stone production, and other industrial applications. Understanding these properties can support sustainable resource utilization, guide engineering practices, and provide a foundation for future research in the geological and materials sciences. The examined samples exhibited high compressive strength, indicating their suitability for use as dimension stones in accordance with standard specifications. The compressive strength ranged from 90.7 to 140.1 MPa, with a mean value of 113 MPa. The water absorption values ranged between 0.14 and 0.44%, with a mean of 0.34%, indicating low water absorption. The bulk density ranged from 2.93 to 2.98 g/cm³, with a mean value of 2.96 g/cm³, reflecting high density. The specific gravity varied between 2.87 and 3.13, indicating a high specific gravity, while the porosity ranged from 0.44 to 1.30%, with a mean of 1.01%, indicating low porosity. In addition, the cut and polished sections exhibited attractive light blue and white colors. The results indicate that the dolostone from the Dhedhertu area is suitable for use as a dimension stone.
