Evaluation of disinfection methods for parasite eggs in fermented liquid bio-fertilizer

Many farmers who use bio-fertilizers operate in integrated production systems, and the safe use of these inputs involves crop production and sanitary and environmental dimensions, making the correct and safe use of bio inputs in agriculture essential. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of different methods of disinfecting parasite eggs from a fermented liquid bio-fertilizer produced with poultry and cattle manure aiming at the production of a safe bio-fertilizer for use. The bio-fertilizer was made from cattle and poultry manure through a semi-anaerobic fermentation process that lasted 21 days. After fermentation, five treatments were tested to see how well they could eliminate parasites. The methods included fermentation, boiling, freezing, solarization, and using sodium hypochlorite. The number of parasite eggs per gram was measured using the McMaster technique in a microscopy lab. It was found that fermentation, solarization, freezing, and sodium hypochlorite did not damage the structure of parasite eggs in the manure. However, the boiling treatment significantly reduced the number of parasite eggs, with a reduction in the number of eggs from 8,975 to 1,200 eggs, leading to the destruction of 87% of the eggs in the control.
