Background/Objective <p>To report the prevalence, causes and risk factors of vision impairment (VI) among those aged ≥40 years in Nagar Kurnool district in Telangana, India. In addition, temporal trends in the prevalence of VI from various population-based studies conducted in this region are reported.</p> Methods <p>Three study teams conducted eye examinations in the selected clusters at participants’ households. Detailed eye examination, including visual acuity assessments were done. VI was defined as the presenting visual acuity worse than 6/12 in the better eye. Multiple logistic regression analysis is conducted to assess the factors associated with VI. The prevalence of VI from three population-based studies conducted over the last two decades in the same region were compared.</p> Results <p>A total of 2570/3000 (85.7%) were examined. Among those, 55.6% were women, and 22.1% had formal education. The prevalence of VI was 22.68% (95% CI:21.08–24.35). The odds for VI increased with increasing age. The participants with no formal education had higher odds for VI compared to those with formal education (OR: 2.25; 95% CI:1.66–3.06). The prevalence of VI declined from 49.9% in 1998 to 22.2% in 2014 and then to 20.8% in 2023.</p> Conclusion <p>VI is common in the state of Telangana. Given the aging in India, the stable VI in the last decade is a positive sign and suggests that eye care services have evolved to address the eye care needs of the people. However, more efforts are needed to reduce VI in the region.</p>
