<p>Despite multidisciplinary team support, neonates with chronic conditions often have unmet social needs adversely impacting health. Medical-legal partnerships (MLP) integrate legal assistance in healthcare settings to address legal issues that deter optimal health outcomes. This commentary reviews the history of the medical-legal partnership model in the United States (US) and outlines the rationale for this model in the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) setting to address health-harming legal needs.</p>
