摘要

Background

A miscarriage can be a life-changing event for women. Existing international research suggests that the professionals providing care have an influence on how women experience and process a miscarriage. To date, little research has been conducted in German-speaking countries on the topic of miscarriage and miscarriage care provided by midwives.

Research question

What experiences do women who suffer a miscarriage in Germany have?

Methods

A qualitative research approach was chosen. Seven narrative interviews were conducted with affected women and evaluated using reflexive thematic analysis.

Results

Four overarching themes were identified, each containing further themes and subthemes: 1) being isolated and lonely, 2) connection 3) passivity—from subject to object 4) activity—from object to subject. Women described experiences of loneliness and limited ability to act, as well as feelings of connection and self-efficacy.

Conclusion

Women have diverse experiences in the context of a miscarriage. Women who have experienced a miscarriage could benefit from midwifery support in the sense of the midwifery model of care. Further research is needed.
