Background <p>Occupational stress is an increasing problem in healthcare with paramedics being one of the most affected groups.</p> Objective <p>This study aimed to evaluate the response to stress in paramedics by measuring serum biomarkers cortisol, IL-6, IL-8 and IL-10 together with ECG parameters, pulse and blood pressure.</p> Methods <p>Blood samples were taken in the morning and in the evening of the day shift, night shift, and the rest day. During these intervals, ECG parameters and blood pressure were continuously monitored in 45 paramedics.</p> Results and conclusions <p>The relative changes of cortisol and IL-8 were significantly different (p &lt; 0.05) during the night shift compared to the day shift or the rest day. We also found the significant correlation (p &lt; 0.05) between cortisol levels and the highest resting heart rate frequency (HRF) during the day shift. Significant correlations between cortisol as well as inflammatory parameters IL-6 and IL-8 with several Holter measurements were found during the night shift suggesting that paramedics are more stressed during the night shift. The findings of this study might be useful for monitoring stress in paramedics and could serve as a basis for prevention programs aimed to avoid the long-term consequences of occupational stress.</p>

Biochemical Stress Markers and Physiological Parameters for Assessment of Stress Response in Paramedics

Background

Objective
