Same tree species, different reproductive phenological patterns between tropical urban green spaces and natural areas

The conversion of forests into urban centers is occurring rapidly around the world and is responsible for climate change, changes in soil properties, and interactions between organisms. Urban green spaces can mitigate the negative effects of urbanization, such as temperature attenuation and reduction of pollution, improving the quality of life of the inhabitants. However, little is known about how these spaces can contribute to the maintenance of tropical urban pollinators. In this study, we investigated: 1) the reproductive phenological pattern of tree species (native and exotic of the Atlantic forest of northeastern Brazil) occurring in tropical urban green spaces, comparing them with the phenological pattern reported in the literature, for natural areas; and 2) the functional group of pollination vectors and dispersal modes of each species. The study was conducted in 14 urban green spaces in the city of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. Tree species were classified according to origin (native or exotic to the Northeastern Brazilian Atlantic forest), pollination system, and dispersal mode. The phenological monitoring was performed for 24 months. We calculated the intensity and synchronization of reproductive phenophases for each functional group. Our results emphasized 1) the absence of native plant species from the Northeastern Brazilian Atlantic forest with specialized pollination, such as birds and Sphingids; 2) native trees have a low level of flowering and fruiting synchrony when compared to exotic trees; 3) the sub-annual flowering pattern is the most frequent; 4) native trees show changes in extension and intensity flowering and/or fruiting patterns in relation to what is observed for them in natural ecosystems, in relation to exotic trees and 5) this change is remarkable for species pollinated by bees. In synthesis, we detect that intraspecific reproductive phenological patterns of tropical trees diverge between urban and natural areas. Tree species occurring in urban ecosystems in the Northeastern Brazilian Atlantic forest may not be able to maintain the pattern of flowering and fruiting when compared to natural areas, which leads to changes in the distribution of resources throughout the year. This, together with the absence of native plants with resources for specialized pollination vectors, negatively affects the maintenance of the diversity of the local fauna, due to the restriction of floral resources for these vectors. Therefore, urban afforestation plans must prioritize species of native plants from each phytogeographic domain and make resources available throughout the year.
