<p>Sonderegger pine (<i>Pinus palustris</i> x <i>Pinus taeda</i>) is considered an unmerchantable timber tree due to past observations of stem forking and large-diameter branches at maturity. Over the past century, however, very few studies have evaluated growth or stem quality of Sonderegger pine. Because landowners generally decline planting Sonderegger pine seedlings, nursery workers cull hybrids from longleaf pine seedling stock during lifting and processing. To better understand Sonderegger pine development, evaluations of height, diameter at breast height (dbh), bole form, and disease occurrence were made on 102 trees at age five. Sixty-four percent of trees were free of defects, and less than 6% had fusiform rust (<i>Cronartium quercuum</i> f. sp. <i>fusiforme</i>). Some hybrids exhibited excellent growth and form, while others were aberrant types that may have resulted from disharmonious genetic combinations. Our results indicate that Sonderegger pine phenotypes, disease tolerance, and subsequent commercial potential may be highly variable in open-pollinated crosses.</p>
