Genetic and multivariate analysis of some local and advanced selected Aman rice genotypes under Bangladesh condition

Rice is one of the primary global food items, underpinning the dietary intake of a substantial portion of the world's population. For ensuring economic and food security in Bangladesh, the development of high-yielding Aman rice varieties is of paramount importance. Though aroma content is an important trait of Aman rice varieties but they are low yielded, so evaluation of potential germplasm is a primary step. In this study, we evaluated 5 best F5 advanced lines (ALs), 18 locals with 2 check varieties to assess their yield and agronomic performance. The analysis revealed that AL PL-1, PL-2, PL-12, PL-13, and PL-15 demonstrated superior growth, tillering, and grain characteristics. These lines consistently showed high values for yield, filled spikelets panicle−1 (FSPP), and thousand-grain weight (TGW), highlighting their robust productivity. Flowering time, TGW, maturity days, and sterility percentages exhibited high heritability, which is strongly influenced by genetic factors and can be effectively selected for future breeding programs. The multivariate analysis, including principal component analysis (PCA) and correlation studies, identified key traits such as TGW, FSPP, and yield plot−1 as significant contributors to genetic variation and they highly impacted the performance of ALs. PCA-based biplot and heatmap analyses demonstrated that the ALs PL-1 and PL-2 had relatively superior yield compared to the others. The results suggest that the identified genotypes can serve as excellent breeding materials for the development of high-yielding Aman rice cultivars. Furthermore, these promising genotypes can be considered for further multi-location yield trials to assess their performance across diverse environmental conditions.
