Morphometric differences of Scartelaos histophorus across ecological regions in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam

The morphological variation of Scartelaos histophorus (Valenciennes, 1837) from the Mekong Delta, Vietnam, in relation to sex, season, and ecological region was investigated in this study. From August 2024 to July 2025, 1436 specimens were collected from four sites representing two ecological regions separated by the Hau River: the northern Hau River (BSH: My Long—Vinh Long, Tran De—Can Tho) and the southern Hau River (NSH: Hiep Thanh and Ganh Hao—Ca Mau). Five morphometric traits (head length (HL), body depth (BD), eye diameter (ED), eye distance (DE), mouth depth (MD)) and four morphometric ratios (BD/HL, ED/HL, DE/HL, MD/HL) were measured and analyzed. The HL, BD, DE, and MD tended to be greater in females; ED was higher in the dry season. The LMM analysis identified the sampling site as the main factor affecting morphometric ratios, followed by sex and individual size, whereas season significantly influenced only certain traits, such as ED/HL. Significant interactions (sex × season, season × site, size × season) indicated that the morphology of S. histophorus varied under the combined influence of biological and environmental factors. These findings represent the first quantitative dataset on the species’ morphology in Vietnam and provide a baseline for taxonomy, ecology, and conservation under climate change.
