<p>The giant gourami is herbivorous freshwater fish native in Southeast Asia which have great economic importance, particularly within Indonesia’s aquaculture industry. Despite having been cultivated for a long time, giant gourami farming still faces several challenges. Generally, the selection of prospective gourami broodstock is only based on sexual dimorphism characteristics which require 3 to 7 years to be perfectly observed. This study aims to explore the level of gonad development and sexual maturity onset of giant gourami as an initial stage of broodstock management. We took a comprehensive approach involving examinations of sexual dimorphism, gonad morphology and histological examination on several groups of giant gourami fish of various weights. Our findings show that characteristics of sexual dimorphism can be observed in the 401–600&#xa0;g weight group. The sexual maturity onset was observed at sizes of 1001–1200&#xa0;g, as indicated by histological observations that revealed the presence of spermatozoa in males and tertiary vitellogenesis in females. This comprehensive study furnishes vital insights into giant gourami gonadal development and the onset of sexual maturity, offering valuable knowledge for aquaculture practices and broodstock management.</p>
